A JOURNEY that began over 18 months ago at the Corbet Field is set for its biggest confrontation yet as Guernsey find themselves one game away from European glory.
For all the Muratti Vases and Island Games won, and the solitary FA National League System Cup success in May, Ankara from Turkey are the opponents for local football’s biggest-ever game, played in the unusual surroundings of the Adriatic.
And after a near-perfect weekend, Tony Vance and his side have left qualification in the Uefa Regions Cup, where they would become only the second English side ever to progress, in their own hands, a win guaranteeing a group win.
One man who has played a part in much of the Sarnian’s success in recent times is Matt Warren (pictured), arguably the most successful Guernsey player ever in terms of range of trophies won, and he has been a man revitalised on the European stage, illustrated in Friday’s 1-1 draw against Croatia.
