A sour taste left

WHAT a horrible ending to a fantastic week.

The defeat by the Turkey team leaves an awfully bitter taste in the mouth.

Tony Vance, Colin Fallaize and the English FA’s Jim Conway all warned us about what they would be like before the game, but I don’t think any of us prepared ourselves for what happened yesterday. You just don’t get it in Priaulx games.

A player biting a chunk out of Ben Coulter’s bum, attempting to bite a chunk out of Ross Allen’s shoulder, scratching Joby Bourgaize’s neck to the bone and spitting at opponents is well and truly out of order. No matter how ‘street wise’ you are, you can’t prepare yourselves for that.

We lost the game 3-0 but I hope everybody back home realises that we only succumbed to two of the goals as we were chasing the equaliser.

It’s been a long time since I’ve been in a changing room like the one I was in yesterday – players broken down in tears and coaches in bits.

Last year’s Island Games comes close but not nearly enough.

We believed we were on the cusp of something great so to see it fall apart was heart-wrenching.

We’d come so far since we started in this competition 18 months ago and to see it end in such a horrible way was so hurtful.

I can’t imagine being brought up to play football the way that the Turkey players have been – it would take out the ‘beautiful’ from the beautiful game.

All of us wanted to give the 91 that came out to support us something else to remember the week by, but unfortunately we fell short.

Nevertheless, we celebrated the week with them all last night in a local Pizzeria to mark how far we have come and I hope I speak for the whole squad when I say it was one of the most poignant nights we’ve spent as a side.

We were well and truly rocking all over the world.player’s perspective
