Car ban ‘doesn’t work’

Saturday 9th October 2010, 2:29PM BST.

Mannel TeixeiraBUSINESSES who claim customers are being scared away by congregating drunks are hoping that this weekend’s trial of a pedestrian zone in the Lower Pollet will be the last.

The aim of the one-month test by police and the Environment Department was to enhance pedestrian safety at busy weekends by banning vehicles in the road between 11pm and 3am.

But Da Nello partner Manuel Teixeira (pictured)  said he would do everything he could to ensure the ban was not made permanent.

‘We’ve had a lot of customers who have been too scared to walk through at night because they can’t be picked up,’ he said.

But drink isnt a problem over here….. is it??

I find it delicously ironic that the daily mail red wine brigade are the ones suffering from the social effects of their chosen drug.

Meanwhile on page 4, Cannabis is evil!!

But ask yourself this, would you still be afraid to leave Da Nello’s if they were all stoned instead??

    Probably not.

Keep the traffic ban, let these people be faced with the ills that they promote!

    Whats that??

You cant turn a blind eye because its in your face!!

You need to make your own opinion??

Oh, does that mean you could be wrong after all??

    I’m perfectly fine and healthy,

I was speaking to the masses in a speech which would have rivalled MLK for passion, had it not been on the internet at 1.34 on a Sunday Morning

But thanks for your concern nonetheless.

Being as how there are hundreds of people going to and coming out of the Barbados,Fusion and the White Hart and only a small number elsewhere I think the road should continue to be closed to traffic at the peak times on fri/sat nights 11pm till 3am.There are just too many people about at these times for them all to be on the pavement, same as in most parts of town during shopping hours.

It’s obviously very sad that people are scared to walk through the Pollet. But when we insist on getting ourselves helicoptered out, turning a blind eye to the problem of aggressive, drunken behaviour, we surrender the most powerful tool we have available to tackle this issue: That is, the presence of a civil majority who are not willing to tolerate socially unacceptable behaviour.

I appreciate that isn’t Mr Teixeira’s problem, but nor is it Environment’s.

I think I know where you are coming from, although MLK……… maybe not!

Have you checked out California’s proposition Number 19???

That will be very interesting if that gets passed and sets a precedent for filling budget shortfalls and mitigating social problems.

Your “red wine brigade” may be faced with uncomfortable evidence ;-)

Ok, maybe MLK was a slight exaggeration!!

Yes I have been following proposition 19 with interest, the votes appear close, it will be interesting to see what happens if it goes through, its projected to completely clear up Californias defecit!

On Guernsey, frankly it makes so much sense its quite astonishing. Frankly with the growing industry in decline, but with a lot of the infrastructure still in place, it would make sense to “switch” the product grown, this would help keep the growing industry alive, it would markedly improve tourism, and the extra tax intake would help fill our budgetary problems.

Ands that completely aside from the fact that its proven to be safer short term and long term than alcohol.

But no, we must beleive the baseless sensationalist garbage written in oulets such as the Mail.
