Ghost busters
Saturday 9th October 2010, 10:00AM BST.
MEMBERS of the Spirit paranormal group visited Herm for a night-long investigation of some of the buildings and public areas.
Spirit was set up just this year and most investigations take place in the Channel Islands.
Some locations are private homes, while others are well-known historical sites such as Vale Castle and the German Underground Hospital.
The Guernsey-based group did as little research as possible before arriving so as not to unduly influence its findings.
‘I had always been interested in Herm as a location because of its history,’ said Spirit co-founder Tim. ‘Then I read Jenny Wood’s book, in which she mentions some of the stories about ghosts on the island and sightings by visitors of a monk in various areas, and I thought it would be worth getting in touch with the new directors to see if they would allow us to come over.’
Assisted by Camille, Paul and Kathy, Tim set up in one of the holiday cottages in the Manor Village for a night of ghost hunting.
The team had access to several buildings and explored the common and Valley Panto, long rumoured to be the home of our resident spirit monk.
The group used CCTV and EVP equipment.
Cameras were set up in several areas while the team were in other locations.
They were looking for any signs of paranormal activity or other evidence of the inexplicable.
‘Herm is a unique location due to its historic past and many factors such as no road traffic, but the most interesting point is that the witnesses are usually holidaymakers and aren’t normally expecting any phenomena,’ said Tim.
Video and audio analysis are still in progress, but anyone who’s ever found themselves on the common after dark probably wouldn’t be surprised to learn that early indications show that on Herm, you may never be entirely alone.
