Plumber says his Bridge plan would speed up traffic flow

TRAFFIC congestion on the Bridge, St Sampson’s, has driven a plumber into proposing a new road layout.
Dave Martin, 63, has been left frustrated when he attempts to drive to his home in Bordeaux, via Bulwer Avenue.
‘I get stuck in traffic with people wanting to go shopping on the Bridge,’ he said. ‘I do use the Co-op and the pharmacist but it depends what time of day it is, how bad the congestion is.’
Mr Martin, who is semi-retired, thinks a third lane should be introduced purely for people who want to shop on the Bridge or use the Co-op.

To me the lay out of pipes and roads can look pretty similar. Let him have a go I say!

What a great idea. Good old Dave the Plumber. Let’s eliminate the parking in front of the shops as well to ensure that no-one will be able to park conveniently nearby and thus drive another nail into the coffin of what remains of The Bridge.

And where does he propose we magic the space for this third lane from?

All it needs is a Policeman to move on the little old ladies with pink hair or the old gits with flat caps who insist on waiting for ages for someone to vacate a parking space at the Chemist end of the Bridge
Get the Police out of the old ladies toilets I say

obviously the bridge is still a popular place to shop and catch up with the locals judging by the amount of people parking there .perhaps a well sited parking building would aleviate some of the congestion at peak times with say the first hour free of charge. The back of the bridge shops provides a natural place for this

I’m not sure of the practical wisdom of this idea but I commend the attitude of someone who is prepared to at least try to make a difference rather than just moaning about it.
There’s a lesson for us all I think, including me!

It’s always good for people to put forward their views and ideas, but I’m not with him at all on this one.
I use the Bridge a lot – to shop, take my gran to the hairdresser, just passing through – and I never find the traffic unbearable, even just after school kick out time.
Why should we have yet another case where The Motor Car is more important than People?
Anyone who wants to visit Safeway on foot has already been relegated to peasant status, as it is dangerous to cross the Rohais and Safeway’s exit/entrance system is not pedestrian-friendly. That’s closer to England than I like on Guernsey.
Why should the Bridge be made into a bypass for those who want to zoom through, at the expense of those who use it?
The Bridge as it is means the elderly can park close to the shops and the community spirit is kept alive. When I visit with my children, I can let them go off safely to another shop without fear of them stepping near a busy road.
I can see no benefit to anyone but the busy motorist, and quite frankly they can remind themselves that nowhere is that far away on this Island and they should’ve started out earlier, if they’re in That much of a hurry!

Next time I have to call a plumber I’m going to tell him where’s he going wrong, what I think he should do and also how long it would take therefore what I think it will cost.

You`re wasting your time because nothing will be done until The States sorts out Leale`s Yard and the pace they run at it will be years before that happens. Pigs will be zooming into the new airport before that.

We all know best I am sure, and all have different ideas, but the bridge traffic is a nightmare and has been for a long time, it is a messy traffic system and very frustrating. Years ago I seem to recall traders on the Bridge saying how well it worked and if you took away the parking spaces their business would close, so good luck Dave the plumber, you are sure gonna need it, cos if you dare take spaces away from Mrs Le Page when she is going to buy her quarter of sherbert lemons at the Candy shop, she will hit you over the head with her handbag.I say go for it Dave it cant get any worse down there.

My daughter in law saw that Simon Mc Corkindale had died and she thought he was very handsome, even when he was an old man – he was 58.

it’s about time we have a re think of the roads – also get a monorail – i watched a documentary with monorails last night. and it works and everyone got to the shop.

If you know the traffic is bad surely you go via St. Claire Hill? I live near Delancey Park and go that way and along Salt Pans just to avoid traffic.
Good idea but with Sam and Paul on this one.
