MORE than 200 people have signed a petition in a few days in a bid to halt plans to move Vale’s war memorial.

Alison Torode and Bernie Coutu will hand it into the Environment Department in the hope of persuading it to reject the parish’s planning application seeking approval to move the monument to the douzaine room.

Parishioners voted 25 to 14 at May’s parish meeting in favour of the douzaine investigating the feasibility of the plan.

Officials carried out that request by making the application to Environment.

However, dean of the douzaine Noel Duquemin stressed yesterday that parishioners would be asked to vote on the next move should the application be successful.

As an Ex Squaddie I think that we should honour our war dead for they have paid for freedom with their life.

A pity that the young people that seem to hang around that area need to remember and respect the memorial for what it stands for.

How on earth can anyone say the monument would be “hidden”?… the front lawn of the Douzaine room is hardly hidden. When the monument was erected it was opposite a Church! St Martin’s moved theirs and that was a brilliant move. We should follow.

Maisie is probably referring to the small church known as the ‘iron church’ (corrogated iron I think)which was demolished and replaced by the
1970′s? houses on the other side of the road ( to the West) of the memorial … to their left in the photo above
