Talk keeps attention on ‘elephant in the room’

Paul MeaderTHE island must continue discussing its relationship with Europe, according to Guernsey International Business Association chairman Paul Meader.

His comments follow the presentation on Monday by the island’s top European adviser, Alastair Sutton, to members of Guernsey’s finance industry and other interested parties.

In his talk, Mr Sutton outlined some of the options and choices Guernsey faced in terms of how it worked with the European Union on issues such as market access.

For Mr Meader (pictured), the presentation provided a useful insight into the working of the EU, the likely path of future legislation and the different routes that Guernsey can take in relation to the EU.

It also kept the subject on the radar, something Mr Meader felt was important, particularly as he described the EU as ‘the elephant in the room’ that the island had failed to face up to for many years.

I attended Professor Sutton’s presentation and he is without doubt at the top of his game. I was concerned that as an obvious Europhile he may not be giving a fully balanced view. I would love to attend a presentation given by a top of his game pundit who takes a more anti-Europe stance. I also hope that he is not our only advisor on the EU.
