A CHINESE takeaway owner will have to pay a £268,556 penalty after he admitted failing to deduct income tax from three illegal immigrants from Malaysia.
Chi Hung Wong, who is also known as Jimmy, pleaded guilty to failing to deduct tax from Lee Wei Ang, Wai Seng Yap and Wan Ming Ng, whom he employed at his premises, the Harbour View on the Bridge.
He also admitted knowingly making a false statement on his tax return on three occasions, and employing people whom he knew did not have right to work documents.
The £268,556 was 40% of the turnover of the business while the men were working there. He will have to sell his house to pay it.
The three men lived at his home, but have since been deported.

He should be deported too!

Seems an open & shut case, he was guilty and paid the price. Immigration laws are made for a reason. Mr G will agree :0)

A five year old infant was walking to school alone when he accidentally swallowed a 10p piece
The poor child couldn’t breath and was going purple in the face but none of the other unaccompanied toddlers knew what to do
Luckily a passing motorist saw this and whacked the kid on the back thus dislodging the coin
Thank you Doctor said the grateful nipper
Oh I’m not a Doctor said the motorist,I work for income tax

It’s about time the authorities started stamping down on these people who abuse the system. Honest employer’s have to play by the rules so why should he be any different. Sorry ‘Jimmy’ your sob story is not good enough. If you don’t like the way Guernsey operates – do the right thing and leave ! The one thing that sticks in my mind is how many other businesses are doing the same, surely we must be able to have random spot checks on sites and businesses in the Island to fish out more of these illegal immigrants.

Mark
I think you will find that many more illegal immigrants are working here illegally. The authorities need to have a full investigation to find out the full extent of the problem.

Every time it involves a foreign food takeaway, in the past its been Chinese of Indian restaurants which are the ‘illegal imigrant’ culprits! It doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure out this is the norm, why do the authorities and imigration not clamp down on these places, they just need to look in the yellow pages or indeed get the menus for the address!

Unfortunataly Ben is correct. In the past 12 months I have known of at least a couple of catering estabishments / hotels who have been “offered” staff who are currently working in local fast food estabishments illegally , all are of the same genre and the person who was approached has passed further information to the authorities.
Sorry Mr Wong , you deserve everything you get, you have defrauded the guernsey public as a whole and in many countries outside of the UK all of your assets would be siezed and you would be in prison. Try doing the same in North Korea !!

Can’t believe the GP editorial today is asking us to feel sorry for this man. He owns an Open market house and a business which has been at least paid for by his criminal activity. £1 million buys very little on the open market so logic suggests that even after the fine is paid he will not be as poor as the paper would have us believe.

I too can’t believe that the GP is taking such a supportive/ feel sorry for him stance. The guy broke the law and has been dealt with appropriately. Would the GP take the same stance if a drug dealer is caught, fined and imprisoned or perhaps a drink driver kills a child whilst driving over the limit etc etc.
