IT IS very much a family affair for Evgeny and Vladimir Sveshnikov.
The father and son duo are competing in this year’s Intertrust Guernsey International Chess Festival at the Peninsula, with high hopes of success during the coming week.
Father Evgeny is the more high-profile of the two men, with the 60-year-old grandmaster world famous within chess circles, but both have represented their adopted country, Latvia.
They were the first father-and-son pairing ever to achieve that feat and Vladimir, who is 24, is visiting the UK for the first time as a player and admits that he discovered the island randomly.

This is not sport! Stick it in the news section if you like but there are too many items in the GEP sports section that are pastimes/hobbies – dancing being another one, just because it involves some physical activity (though not too much judging by our local dancing heroes!) or competitive element does not make it a sport. Would an item about, say, a marching band competition be in the sports section? No, of course not but we have to put up with these totally pointless “sports” items just to fill some empty space. Yes I know I’m overreacting but after years of this nonsense you get a bit cheesed off.
