Societe calls for openness on property sales

PLANS to sell historic buildings should be made transparent if the Treasury and Resources Department wins its bid for more freedom, La Societe Guernesiaise has said.
Under current circumstances the department must submit a full report to the States to approve the sale or lease of island property with historical significance.
The proposals, to be debated in November, argue the choice to submit a report should be left to the discretion of Treasury and the Environment Department depending on how significant the building was.
La Societe Guernesiaise historic buildings section secretary John McCormack (pictured) agreed the move would save time in deciding the future of buildings of insufficient historical importance. But any decisions made by the two departments would have to be publicised.
