Following Jersey on full parcels competition needs law change

OUR director John Curran.JERSEY’S parcel post has been opened up to competition but no similar move will happen in Guernsey until new legislation is in place, according to director-general of the Office of Utility Regulation John Curran (pictured).

The Jersey Competition Regulatory Authority has licensed Citipost and Hub Europe to operate in the island’s packet market from 18 November, in a move designed to open up competition in servicing the fulfilment industry.

Competition was increased in the Guernsey market last month when Guernsey Post’s monopoly in the bulk mail packet market was ended. Other companies can now handle mail that costs more than £1.35 to post.

The OUR has just completed a consultation on licensing in the postal market and Mr Curran said it had to put forward new proposals on this matter before looking at introducing competition in the reserved area.

Sad to see this is still going on, thought Guernsey may have seen sense by now and realised that this does not work on small Islands where you need to support your core utility services.
Opening up competition has seen the Island owned core air services suffer, and now it looks like the same inappropriate groundings are going to be applied to the postal services.
Can this not be stopped and this regulator disbanded before more harm is done.

I hope Guernsey delays any such legislation ( for as long as the animal welfare law has been sitting in someone’s ‘too hard to do’ tray) so that we can observe the effect in Jersey
