GUERNSEY’S adopted 201 Squadron is set to disband.

Prime Minister David Cameron confirmed yesterday that the cancellation of the Nimrod replacement programme, as part of cuts to the military budget, meant RAF Kinloss would no longer be required.

The announcement cast grave doubt over the future of 201 Squadron, which operates the iconic aircraft from the Scottish base.

Guernsey’s Lt-Governor from 1980 to 1985, Air Chief Marshal Sir Peter Le Cheminant, said he hoped the unit could live on.

‘It’s a very historic squadron and, for that reason, I hope they will keep the numberplate but I must say it looks like the end of the line.’
