VAZON Coast Road is a well-known haunt for speeding motorists.

But on Saturday, 100 fortunate islanders were allowed to drive at more than 35mph for charity.

A wide range of cars from Lamborghinis to Minis competed in the HGIB Charity sprint, which was aimed at non-motor sport competitors.

Usually the Vazon sprint is only open to members of the Guernsey Kart and Car Club or the Guernsey Motorcycle and Car Club. But by paying a £50 entry fee, drivers could travel as fast as they wished along the coast road.

It was also a charity event raising money for the Pink Ladies.

    Did you race/drive on Saturday?
It was one day so what if there was engines revving,if it was a normal sprint then cars would of been even louder. Cigrettes and litter around it’s like that in town all the time not litter but cigrettes on the ground. I beleive if you have a nice fast car why not be aloud to put your foot down in a controlled arear. Its was for charity so yes I hope it happenes again great to watch. Shame on the weather.

I was there all afternoon and the drivers of those cars were very well behaved, hardly any noise apart from the start line.
The only thing that is sad are people like you that want to complain about others having fun and giving money to a charity at the same time.
Oh and its not half a mile and neither is it a straight line.

After just watching the CTV sports news i was horrified to see people sat the whole length of the sea wall, and walking on the track on the Grande Mare side as well.
When they have the proper sprint on that is a definite no no. Spectator safety is paramount and it would not be allowed full stop, there was even a crowd standing on the start line.
I applaud the money raised for charity but i am really glad someone did not lose control of one of those cars, i believe that event if made regular is a tragedy waiting to happen.

I was one of those drivers participating on Saturday and I must say that I as like many others thought the day was a complete success. Not only did we raise a lot of money for charity, but some of us who would not get the chance to do anything like this in their lifetime were truly grateful for the opportunity to do so. For those of you who feel the need to complain about people enjoying themselves whilst helping others, get yourself a life.

As the organiser of the event if A Noyed or Mark or anyone else that has issues would like to contact me; stuart.butler@heritage.co.gg please do so as I would be happy to take such comments on board and address them as appropriate.

Health & Safety was the first priority with this event and in someways we went further than a normal sprint.

    However, to correct some inaccuracies:

    - there was prior notice both in the Press,on Island FM and on BBC Radio Guernsey, as well as many residents being advised

    - there were no cars revving engines in Rocquettes Road and the traffic was being controlled by a Special Constable

    - all health & safety was similar to a normal sprint and people sit on the sea wall for normal sprints as they have for years

    - no one was walking on the Grande Mare side of the road when the cars were driving other than where they are allowed to be on a normal sprint

    - spectators were allowed to stand near the start line but behind it as tyre warming was not used as in normal sprints

    - any minor issues that arose which there will always be with any large event will be ironed out should there be another such event in the future

    - over 100 people took part, over 100 members of the public had passenger rides and some 2,000-3,000 spectators turned up on the day and everyone that spoke to me and other marshalls and there were many, advised that the event was long overdue, how well it was organised and they hoped it occurs again

The event will inevitably not satisfy everyone and some will always be anti such an event whether it raises substantial funds for charity or not.

However, anyone that has any constructive ideas and/or would like to volunteer to assist with making the event better next year please come forward as your ideas and assistance would be welcome.

    Regards

    Stuart

The Police were present a) because they were paid for by the organisers to control and traffic and any other issues and b) because they saw the event as an opportunity to promote their road safety initiative, as did the St John Ambulance & Rescue Service.

None of us want people speeding on the public highway and this event gave people the opportunity to do so in a controlled environment.

I took part in this fantastic event on Saturday and I have to say, i would like to be the first to have my name down for next year

The organisation that must have been involved in getting permission to use the road, getting the food vans and spreading the word around for the event – would have taken up a lot of time and considering this was all for a very worthy charity, is fantastic.

Understandably islanders got annoyed with the traffic on the La Rocquette Road, but this is a very small price to pay to raise £20,000 for the Pink Ladies.

I drive a smart car usually, and im not a fast driver whatsoever. So getting the chance to put my foot down along the Vazon coast road was very exciting…. Each to their own but I loved it.

    Disappointed

I am somewhat disheartened that some would seek to criticise an event that has raised so much for a local charity.

There are many events in the island that take place that I may not be an avid fan or supporter of, and do cause some inconvenience to me personally.

However, I like to consider the greater good that such events bring to a community, tolerate the fact that others have interests that I do not, and accept the occassional inconvenience as a part of life in any community.

Firstly thanks for such a well organised and safe day’s fun.

Lets not forget that £20,000 was raised for an extremely worthwhile charity in a time that charities are struggling to raise funds.

Yes some minor improvements could no doubt be made for next year, but this was the first running of this event. A mild amount of disruption and tolerance needs to be permitted in order to allow events such as this to succeed. What if the Half Marathon was no longer able to be run because people were fed up of the coast road being backed up or the Battle of Britain cancelled because the aircraft are too noisy!

As for cars revving up the road, it is complete nonsense, I spent half the day directing traffic past the que of participants and did not hear any of them revving apart from to move along the row and even this wasnt loud.

The day was very, very well organised and I can tell that a lot of effort was put into it and it really paid off.

It does not matter whether you see the attraction.

The point is that on that day several hundred people had a great day, £2000 went into the coffers of a local hotel, and most important of all £20,000 went to a local charity.

There were some problems with fitting in all the cars, but that reflects the popularity. It was exceedingly well-run, it was safe, and it was a grand day out for a lot of people, participants and spectators alike.

Will you be specific about what was not well organised, or are you choking on your sour grapes? Wait – I think there’s someone having fun and doing a good turn in Town – better get up there and complain eh!!

    Mark,

I’ve just checked 625 photographs taken that day and can’t see anyone walking on the track. There were indeed people sat the entire length of the sea wall, and they had their legs the other side. Whenever someone put a leg over the wall, the commentators stopped the next run and asked them to move back. Exactly as they do on a normal sprint

Nice that enough people turned up in rotten weather to fill the whole sea wall as you say. It shows that drivers and spectators alike are keen for this type of event.

Top marks to the Castel douzaine for supporting this event. They obviously recognise what the public wants to do with our public spaces.

The event was really well supported (especially given the weather) and raising over £20,000 for such a deserving charity was a REALLY fantastic achievement. The organisers should get a meaty pat on the back bearing in mind it was their first time. I am not sure that they deserve anything but compliments but I am certain that they will listen to all complaints and make improvements for the any future events. I took part in the sprint. I thought it was an excellent event, well organised, well run and most importantly, FUN.

It raised money for a very worthwhile cause and I saw no one inconvenienced in any way.

The traffic was well controlled and on the times I saw non sprinters either passing us or those people wanting to drive into their houses they were let in or out by everyone without exception. Everyone I saw was courteous to local residents. There was no revving of engines that I heard, most of us shut our engines down where possible to both save fuel and stop them from overheating.

People should look at the good work of charity based events before criticising the organisers.

Thanks to Stuart and his team for their hard work to make the day possible. Looking forward to the next one.

I was at the sprint on Saturday. It was a well organised fun day. Besides raising a substantial sum of money for an excellent and well deserving charity, to me, the beauty of this event was the fun element – the cars taking part were not sprint specialists or hybrids, they were road cars. A huge portion of the participants were not driving performance vehicles at all. It was a great day for us ‘ordinary’ folk to enter our usual family/school-run/shopping cars in a fun event that we would not otherwise have an opportunity to do, at all.

The weather was a bit wet, but the event was very safely run, organised similarly to a normal sprint with marshals, police, ambulance, Etc. The size of the crowd that came and watched and the number of those that paid their fare to the Pink Ladies to sit in the passenger seats of the sprinting cars, demonstrates how well received and popular this fun event was.

I met a lot of similarly minded people on the day, just having a day out and taking their family cars for a jolly good time.

I heard no cars revving while they were waiting their turn in the parking, or queuing in the traffic flow controlled areas (which controlled roads were also under the watchful eyes of the police). The only revving that I heard was taking place at the start line of the sprint, not on the roads. Also, the sprinting lasted for just under 5 hours, and the cars in the queue had their engines off, most of the time. These are normal road legal cars and normal exhaust noise limits apply. If the cars sitting in the queues had their engines running or revving during that period they would have overheated or run out of fuel.

Met some lovely people and had a great fun day out.

Sprint Organiser – Firstly I will state quite clearly that I thoroughly support last Saturdays sprint and it’s good work for charity. I watched it for most of that day and hope you have another one next year and in years to come. However when Mark says there were people and a lot of them , on the walkway behind the low wall on the Grande Mare side of the road he is absolutely correct. I and a number of other spectators were stood on the bunker by the finish line and we all commented on how dangerous that could have been if a car went out of control. As far as I am aware this is not permitted at the other sprints. I travelled down La Rocquette Road twice that day and did not see a special constable helping traffic which was seriously delayed at times. That needs to be addressed next time.

Well done to the organiser for coming on here and setting the record straight. As he said there is always room for improvement but it seems pretty clear that the event was well organised and raised a decent sum for charity.

Unfortunately there will always be those who feel the need to complain about the slightest inconvenience to their day, or just pick faults for the sake of it.

The best thing to do is ignore such people – they’ll never be satisfied anyway so there’s no point trying to placate them.

One last comment on this subject as i do not want to get into a war of words with Mr. Butler but i feel i have to respond to the inaccuracies he quoted.

Spectators do not sit on the wall watching the sprint there is a roped off area between the seawall and the inner wall and the organisers would certainly not let anybody sit on the inner wall with legs hanging over.

I did not say that people were walking on the Grande Mare side of the road i said that they were on the track on the Grande Mare side of the road which is also not allowed on sprint days.

With regard to the comment that competitors were not revving engines in La Rocquettes Road is simply untrue, the Senior Constable of the Castel was in attendance in the area, and i am sure if anybody would like to phone the douzaine during office hours they would be given the full picture.

Apart from the noise and all driveways being blocked down the left hand side of the road with no access to properties, you had to join the queue of competitors to access gates on the left.

I attended this event and thought it was extremely well organised. I also sat in the queue on each lap to access the pits and whilst I did see the odd car having to wait to access a driveway, it did not seem a long wait. Ok, if you are in a rush – but I have been stuck waiting in roads behind someway phaffing about with no apparent reason so what’s the big deal for possibly only an annual event. There was also a Special Constable who did a brilliant job. As with some of my colleagues – if this road is regularly used by the racing fraternity – what is the problem? I am sure their cars are noisier than my 2 litre BMW?? I think it would be very shortsighted if a recurrence of this event is prevented. The charity flavour to this event made it very welcoming for the novice as official racing events can be a little intimidating. But then I guess it’s British to complain about everything!

    Mark,

    Thanks for your additional comments.

Whatever event is held be it the North Show, West Show, Liberation Day, Battle of Britain, Harbour Carnival or the Public Charity Sprint, there will always unfortunately be some disturbance or noise. As organisers we knew that there would inevitably be some problems and not everyone will support this or any other event. If the event goes ahead in the future any problems that were identified, and there were some, will be changed to make the event better. However, it is impossible to organise any event that is perfect.

If people were standing where you say they were they should not have been and the marshalls should have asked them to move. I was certainly unaware of this and have not seen any video footage or photos to show this as yet but if the event goes ahead again any “teething problems” will certainly be ironed out and this is something that will be considered in any future Risk Assessment.

The minor problems in La Rocquettes Road will not occur again in the future as we now have two alternatives to this.

If there were issues with cars revving in La Rocquettes Road, again I am not aware of these and during the afternoon this area was marshalled by a special constable, myself, my son and another marshall called Laura who has also replied and none of us are aware of this.

It is a shame if this was happening that you or the Senior Constable or anyone else did not talk to the Special Constable, me or one of the other marshalls at the time so that we could have dealt with it and only mention it after the event. Certainly I had several residents talk to me when I was marshalling all of whom made comments such as the event was long overdue, what a great event or other such comments.

If you would like to advise me who was revving their engines (if you do not know who then the make and colour of the car will allow us to identify them) we can then deal with this as every driver was advised in a meeting they attended not to speed, overtake, make excessive noise, etc and as far as I am aware everyone acted courteously.

If you would like to join us to improve things for any possible future events your input would be appreciated as it is only if people advise us that there were problems, as you have done that we can then rectify them.

    Regards

    Stuart

One thing that I’d like to mention is that the mud from the car park on the side did seem to hamper the start a bit – made it even more slippery than the rain. Possible a tyre clean if the car comes out of that side. If that is doable.

    Saint Marcouf,

You really should have come and asked the thousands of spectators at the event why they were there and you may then perhaps have understood – when you see and hear a little eight year boy jumping up and down in joy and saying to his mum & dad as I did, “wow look at that Lamborghini” it makes it all the worthwhile orgainsing an event like this.

Some of those that took part cannot afford to go to France. If anyone was to drive in France at the speeds those that took part were doing you are likely to be fined and have your driving licence taken from you.

For your information there were no more motoring events at Vazon this year than previous years as there was one less club event, so even with this charity event there were the same number as usual. In fact the three annual normal sprints are now half days whereas in the past they used to be full days, so there is actually less disturbance than there used to be.

I am sure we would all welcome anybody organising a new event that 200+ people can participate in, 2,000-3,000+ spectators can watch and which importantly raises £20,000+ for charity and causes no disturbance &/or noise but it is simply not possible – if anyone can we will happiliy all come and support it.

    Chris.
Obviously your geographical knowledge of the area we are discussing is inadequate. The bunker is well away from the road and we were not in any danger. If you can step away from your desire to be clever you might consider this – I support the sprint and would not like to see anything occur that prevented it from happening again. There were a group of people behind the low wall on the landside of the road. If there had been an accident this event may have not been allowed to repeat itself next year. That would be a shame. Contrary to your attempt to portray me as a moaner, I am trying to offer a serious viewpoint that I presume the sprint organiser will take note of and not allow to occur next time.

Yup the bunker is away from the road but you obviously don’t know about the Porsche that went over the top of the bunker not long after the sprint had started. can;t remember the guys name but I aam sure somebody will tell you hence my question to you about standing where it is dangerous. PS NOT trying to be clever and NOT trying to portray you as a moaner either just pointing out that its dangerous on the bunker as well as everywhere alse whilst vehicles as travelling fast. In fact i have competed in and also watched the official sprint for years so I am behind the whole concept of a charity sprint.

As a Vazon resident I walked the few hundred yards from my home to the coast road and got there for 12.15pm and stayed until the last run of the day.

The atmosphere amongst drivers, organisers and spectators was terrific, in spite of the weather and it appeared to me to be an extremely well run event which ran like clockwork.

Congratulations must go to Stuart Butler and the organising committee and the authorities that allowed the event to take place.

I find it very hard to believe that anybody should be complaining about minor inconveniences for a few hours when so much good was done.

I know from the initial publicity many months ago when the idea of the public sprint was first mooted that it was hoped that some of the many “kevs” would be attracted to take part. It was suggested that they would be able to speed legitimately and rather ironically it would be on part of “the track” that so many of them seem to race on after dark on a weekly basis. However, I did not see much evidence of these cars and drivers on Saturday. To be fair they may have been on the waiting list and I would hope that, if this is the case, that they would get an opportunity to take part in any future event.

If there are safety issues to be taken on board, I am sure that they will be, as the organisers do appear to be very responsible people, and I only hope that they are able to organise a similar event next year and that there will be room for my trusty Skoda to take part.

Chris. There were a number of people standing on the bunker.Amongst the group was a police sergeant and a number of men who said they had raced in the sprint on many occasions. About 30 yards below us was the race commentator and a marshal. The marshal sent some newly arrived spectators away from the fence next to the pavement and told them to stand up with us. So I am lost as to your assertion that we were in a dangerous place.Unless the marshal was acting against instructions that I assume were given prior to racing.

    Mac & Chris.

I think you are talking about different bunkers. Mr Ashworth’s Porsche struck the seaside bunker after the finish line. Mac means the bunker owned by the golf club which is in line with the finish line and it would not be possible to fly over that one. I thought the main point was persons being behind the low wall at La Grande Mare – as a regular competitor you would know that no one is allowed there on Car club sprints. Or maybe you are so fast you do not notice the absence of spectators !
