Four-month closure of private wing at PEH

Wednesday 27th October 2010, 2:29PM BST.

Victoria Wing closed to the publicTHE private wing at Guernsey’s main hospital will be closed for around four months because of staff shortages – but health chiefs say patient care will not suffer.

Victoria Wing at the Princess Elizabeth will shut in approximately two weeks after the laying of new flooring has been completed in Ozanne Ward.

A Health and Social Services spokesman said the move was a result of forecast staff shortages over the next few months, which meant the ward had to be shut until they could recruit more.

‘Patient and staff safety are at the heart of the decision to temporarily close Victoria Wing,’ he said. ‘There are currently 16 to 18 vacancies in medical and surgical services, with a predicted increase to 28 vacancies by the end of the year and some of these are at senior levels.’

ASk them why they wouldn’t give the Vic Wing ward manager an extension to her licence – that would have been one less member of staff to recruit. The rumour doing the rounds is that Vic Wing will never reopen.

Ask why a professional local girl was told they were not recruiting at the moment.

Making cuts, yes, but playing the political card!!

I guess with one ward less to manage, top managers will have less work and staff can be reduced, saving more money.

What amazes me, is that they close Vic wing because they don’t want to pay for agency nurses, yet at the King Edward one ward is never filled to its capacity, yet it is one of the most over staffed wards in the Board of Health. With extremely high sickness levels which never gets looked into and stupid amounts of overtime given out.Maybe they should have a closer look.

such a weird idea to close Vic Wing. No doubt they will loose nurses who have worked there for years and who don’t want to be relocated and retrained. What about all the isolation rooms? Where will private patients go? Probably to the UK for surgery – more of a loss of revenue, and more of an infection risk. Methinks there is more news to follow…..

Perhaps one of the king Edward wards could be relocated to Victoria Wing? Im sure the patients, after sleeping with 4 people in a bay for many years and sharing a bathroom with 20 others, would love their privacy and dignity back?

    Debate…
