RESIDENTS at a St Peter Port lane have reacted to news that Les Rocquettes Hotel wants to build new staff accommodation with complaints about what is there now.

The business has applied for permission to build a two-storey staff house comprising six en-suite bedrooms and a common room with kitchenette in the current back car park.

The hotel’s current staff bungalow would be knocked down under the plans and the car parking spaces reduced to 27 from 34.

Residents were not worried about the look of the new building, but more about the noise.

    The Truth

Evidently people do care Nazareth. Living on an island this small everyone has to be respectful of their neighbours.

Why do you have to leave the door open because someone is visiting? Can they not knock like everyone else?

I’m more concerned that the parking spaces are being reduced to 27! Nightmare parking there on a quiz night.

I can understand why people like Nazareth say they live a lonely life on Guernsey. With long working hours, relatively short stays, not to mention the cultural and language barriers it’s no wonder.

A few years ago I spent 3 months working in a foreign country as a single guy and although I made friends I still felt lonely. With a few exceptions the majority of those friends were fellow ex-pats.

Those that manage to integrate are the lucky ones. In my case I have got to know a number of immigrant workers through my local church. Although we have cultural and language difficulties our common faith transcends those barriers. Others share common ground through work, sport and other pastimes.

Those that cannot find common ground will inevitably find it difficult and form sub-communities of their own.

The Truth is right – in a small island we must respect our neighbours. I trust that respect is a two way street though.
