The Commerce and Employment Department has this week launched a consultation to gather views on whether Guernsey needs to strengthen its employment legislation to ensure adequate protection for businesses and staff.

Confederation of Guernsey Industry chairman Peter Budwin (pictured) said the organisation had yet to discuss its response to the consultation in detail but in general terms the CGI would strongly recommend a light-handed approach.

‘Business flourishes very well with as few regulations as possible. I’m not suggesting that we should be totally unregulated, but we always like to see a user-friendly approach. There will be some necessary changes made I’m sure,’ he said.

It is unsurprising that a body which represents business employers would like a light handed approach to employment legislation.

I must agree legislation should never be over burdensome but more importantly it should serve a purpose, and the purpose of this legislation should be to protect the rights of employees in Bailiwick. I think this should be the main focus when drafting any new legislation.
