GUERNSEY’S ‘Chancellor’ is unconcerned by a 2.6% drop in the latest gross domestic product figures.

Yesterday the Policy Council published its first estimate of Guernsey’s GDP for 2009 showing that after three years of growth the figure had slipped by 2.6% to stand at £1,883m.

But statistics from the UK showed that its economy had gone in the opposite direction, rising by 2.8% over the year.

Treasury and Resources minister Charles Parkinson (pictured) said Guernsey’s economy could not be directly compared with the UK.

is 2.6% more like headline 2% or conventional 3%?

Perhaps our Chancellor should take a leaf out of an old Guernsey method of making the money stretch

Apparently in the late 1960′s an American tourist off one of the very first visiting cruise ships walked into Wyndhams Hotel and said that he had spent so long appreciating our wonderful market building that he had missed his ship back to Way Mouth. He therefore needed a bed for the night.

Here’s some of your British pounds he said, dropping a wodge of thirty notes on the counter, but I need to inspect the rooms to make sure they are up to my usual standard

As he was making his way up the stairs the Hotel butcher arrived with the next day’s order. The Hotelier handed him the £30 which he owed for the previous month’s meat deliveries

The butcher took the cash up the road to Ray Lowe’s decorators to pay a £30 bill for having his house painted

Ray Lowe raced off to British Rail at the White Rock and paid in the cash to clear his previous month’s freight bill

The British Rail guy hurried along with the cash to the Herm Kiosk at the Weighbridge and booked two Herm boats for a forthcoming Sunday School picnic

The Herm Kiosk manager nipped across the road to Vaudin’s taxis and paid off his monthly fuel bill with the £30

The Vaudin’s Taxi guy ran along to Wyndhams Hotel to place a deposit on a Wedding Reception for his daughter

Just as the Vaudins guy pocketed his receipt for the booking the American came down the stairs and scooping up the British pounds said “I’m sorry but none of the rooms are to my liking,I’ll try the Royal Hotel”

As he left the building the American remarked that he very much appreciated the British spirit of maintaining a cheerful face despite the loss of business
