ISLANDERS reacted angrily yesterday to the States’ decision to support museum storage improvements instead of a bowel cancer screening programme.

Of 55 people spoken to in Town yesterday just one backed the museum moves.

Broadcasters and local online forums also had people expressing incredulity at the decision not to support screening.

And a poll on Guernsey Press sister website thisisguernsey asking if islanders thought the States was right to reject bowel cancer screening swiftly saw 82% of islanders saying government had got it wrong.

As already posted by others elsewhere.
It is not about not screening, it is about Health sticking their spending within their already allocated budget.
This is sensationalism reporting and not highlighting the facts.

Is that about 0.0008% of the population that were asked? Quite a large questionnaire then.

The money was already destined to be used for museum storage, perhaps Health need to spend their money more wisely in the future?

I guess they’ll be another bloody requete, as none of them can ever decide anything.

Why don’t the states use the money that will inevitably be wasted on debating paid parking for the millionth time on the screening. The States of Guernsey simply can’t govern and just waste money all the time.

look man. Health have the cash, fact, the board just haven’t got the wit or the business acumen to make any internal savings.

Roffey used to do it, Brehaut does it and now Fallaize and the barely comprehensible Scot. Refuse to make any savings and threaten front line services. The only emotive players are the board who used dying people to try and get extra cash.

Guernsey people being sent to the Priory? Guerns mixing with Pete Docherty? Funny as hell that one. Can’t find that service cheaper? Course they can.

Smokescreen…Health has a budget and could easily find funds to provide screening. States could save £250k in the time it has taken to bring this row to the house…it’s time politicians stopped posturing and got down to some real work…if we need screening, fund it through savings elsewhere in health, not by ransacking other departments.

This is a complete smoke screen and totally unfair on Mike O’Hara. Unfortunately with X Factor type reporting, the real facts will not get reported.

This is not about Museum artifacts v bowel cancer screening. It’s about HSSD, continually over spending their budget and NOT PRIORITISING bowel screening.

The States cannot keep chucking tax payers money at HSSD.

HSSD need to sort their finances prompto, and stop hiding behind fire engines in old sheds.

Dave, you can’t just say someone’s wrong without any evidence to back up that fact, how is Mr G wrong? In my opinion he’s exactly right…

Reading these comments I have come round to thinking that the spotlight now should be firmly on HSSD to come up with a solution to ensure bowel screening is in place next year. Surely it cannot be beyond the wit of the department to make cuts in some of the areas that patently are not life or death. In my view the answer lies in the department’s title. The social services element although desirable is NOT life or death and some of the spending in this area is very, very dubious indeed.
I am thinking of the sort of ‘outreach’ and ‘liason’ posts that you see advertised in the Guardian and professional publications. HSSD has one vacancy at the moment for some sort of family health worker. Is this life or death? No it isn’t. Don’t go ahead with this post for 2011 and hey presto you have £40,000 or £50,000 already that can be diverted instantly towards bowel screening.
Hunter Adam’s call on BBC Guernsey this morning for staff within his department to become whistle blowers against waste was lame and lamentable. Like asking turkeys to vote for Christmas. To sum up I regret the way the States voted but that decision has been made and now is the time for HSSD to step up to the plate and revisit its own budgetary allocations for 2011. The voting public will accept nothing less.
