Skatepark plan ‘an opportunity missed’
Monday 8th November 2010, 2:29PM GMT.
NEWLY approved plans for a skatepark have been called a missed opportunity by a deputy.
Permission for the park at Beau Sejour was granted last week after years of waiting.
The Xtreme Sports Association has said it could be ready by Easter if enough businesses come forward now to provide the £250,000 needed to fund it.
But St Peter Port deputy Jan Kuttelwascher (pictured) said he was unhappy with the plans and thought the skatepark should be built inside.

I could imagine Jan skating, maybe he doesn’t want to get wet?

Whilst Dep Jan has put forward an interesting propostion, it does smack of point scoring to me and not without a tad of frustration creeping in. As for Dep “Wallace” Rodd, how typical of him to be posturing around the sidelines and state absoutely nothing at all. Maybe his side kick “Grommitt” Gollop will step in with some rhetoric…. I would be interested in hearing where Dep Jan would consider the “right place” for an indoor skate park to be; some years ago, I believe, some guy put forward the idea of an indoor ice rink, maybe they should get together.
However, there is still a vast amount of money that these youngsters and some, not so young “youngsters” have to realise, which I hope they achieve, it will be hard, I feel, bearing in mind that a lot of private and corp sponsorship today is being driven towards team sport efforts.
I think that now Dep O’Hara, wearing his C & L hat, should bow out now, the seeds have been sown for what is basically private enterprise from now in.

It is healthy to play outside. Best place for it outside I would think, the one by me is outside and heavily used that I can see.

Well thanks for that Jan, and thanks for being involved with the development of the plans in the first place.
If you cared what so ever about this development within Your parish you would have been involved over a year ago.
As for where the money will come from, you’ll be pleased to know that the States aren’t actually putting anything into this, from what i’ve heard from Mike Ohara the park will be funded entirely from corporate donation.

“An opportunity missed” headline should have been something more like…..
“Deputy doesn’t want skatepark near his house”

I’m no particular fan of Mike O’Hara but credit where credit’s due he has worked tirelessly to secure a fcility like this for several years and I congratulate him and any others that have assisted.
So sad though to see fellow states members popping out of the wood work now to say in essence ‘Yeah it’s OK but it could be better’. Maybe we can come back to Deputy Kuttelwascher in a few years time when it’s decided that an extension is needed like the runway !?
