Graeme MillarWAVE TELECOM plans to trial a fibre network for Guernsey homes next year.

It plans to make the world’s fastest broadband speeds available in Guernsey through the development of a fibreoptic and mobile broadband network.

Wave is already offering up to 10 gigabit services for business customers. Alongside this, planned improvements to the super-fast mobile broadband network will double speeds from 7.2 to 14.4 mbps before the end of the year.

Graeme Millar (pictured), chief executive of Jersey Telecom Group, Wave’s owner, said the improvements were part of its five-year growth strategy.

Didn’t read full artical but does this mean more roads have to be dug up to lay the cables? There’s enough of that going on as it is

Depends on which backbone they use. I believe Cable & Wireless already use fiber optic between exchanges and if Sure use that [backbone], they could implement fiber to cabinet like BT Infinity does (40 down, 10 up). Thus wouldn’t need the roads digging up but is very reliant (speed-wise) on how much copper you have to the nearest exchange and hence CWGSY putting in more [MSAN?] exchanges.

Unfortunately I can’t tell you more since our telephone infrastructure doesn’t have a lot of public information.
