A SODDEN Saturday and two losses for the cream of island youth football made for sorry viewing.

But while the Guernsey under-18s were as dismal as the weather in crashing 6-2 at home to Wiltshire in the FA County Youth Cup, it was a brave performance by the Greens’ under-21s who lost the annual Ambassadeur Bowls clash 2-1 at Springfield.

After falling two goals behind, Martyn de Garis’s side were given a lifeline by Scott Bougourd’s headed goal, but despite a fine second half performance – which many observers felt deserved at least extra-time – it was the red-and-whites who retained the trophy.

De Garis said ‘it was a fantastic effort by us in the second half.’
