More space to sleep

TENANTS will have more sleeping space after the biggest shake-up in the rental law in more than 70 years came into force earlier this month.
Landlords now risk severe fines if they do not keep up to date with the regulations.
Deputy chief environmental health officer Tony Rowe said while the law covered every household in Guernsey, it was most likely to affect homes in multiple occupation.
‘Generally speaking, it is a small number of landlords that cause the problem,’ he said. ‘We are hoping they will now look at upgrading or extending their accommodation or having fewer workers.’
Mr Rowe (pictured) said overcrowding could lead to health problems including diseases or infestations such as bed bugs.
