THE good wishes of the Bailiwick will today be sent to Prince William and Kate Middleton following the announcement yesterday of their engagement.

On behalf of people in Guernsey, Alderney, Sark and Herm, Lt-Governor Sir Fabian Malbon has sent a message to Clarence House.

‘We have sent the best wishes of the Bailiwick and look forward to hopefully seeing them in the Bailiwick before too long,’ said Sir Fabian.

The heir to the throne proposed to his long-term girlfriend on holiday in Kenya last month when he gave her his late mother’s engagement ring.

I do hope this doesn’t spark months of media driven royal-mania. Learn the lessons of Charles and Diana and keep it as low profile as possible for the sake of their marriage and our national sanity.

Who really, really cares about something so dripping with tabloid and tiredness?

Sir Fabian is one of the most likeable Governors we have had, however should it not be our bailiff that expresses our good wishes and hopes.

Anyway on the side Bill, well done, tasty.

I think that we should be a bit wary here of how vitriolic we might be about the level of coverage of this (not saying that Paul, Andrew and Vic have been of course, but people have elsewhere).

Because it’s not Will and Kate who necessarily WANT all the coverage – it’s the media using it to sell papers. At the end of the day they are just a young couple like any other, albeit rich, and I bet they would love to fly under the radar, at least until the day itself!

To be honest…..Who actually cares?! I mean, come on! How does this justify front page news? And it seems I can’t turn on the TV now without hearing how ‘Wonderful’ this occasion is?! There’s much more pressing matters that should be given equally enough attention if not more

The Royal Family just doesn’t interest the general public anymore. Or am I wrong?

I’ll only be in the faintest bit interested if we get a day off work.

If it gets us an extra day public holiday that would be a real cause for celebration!
Will the States of Guernsey do the right thing for us peasants, if the UK is closed for business on the wedding day surely there’s not much point in us working?

Having read the comments about the forthcoming ‘Royal Wedding’ on the main BBC site I cannot believe what a miserable lot of people live in this world. So many of the comments were un-called for and unnecessary. With all the sad and horrible things that seem to be happening in the World at the moment surely it is a pleasure to have some happy news for a change. I wish them all the happiness for their future together and I hope they are left alone and not chased by photographers/reporters all the time like Princess Diana was.

Yes, My2Cents, hate to tell a fine upstanding person such as yourself ( and other negative posts) but you are indeed wrong. Billions of us world wide are very interested in the Royal Family, especially interested in Queen Elizabeth 2nd as well, that’s why there is such a frenzy regarding William and Kate, and we should all be proud that we have something so special as the Monarchy. The past few years have been rough ones for our Queen, It’s time something good happened for her. Or would you rather have the Chinese chiefs dishing it out to you?

    Don’t worry PETE.

I cannot see the poor tax-payers of Guernsey being asked to chip in.
If your Government can not help the victims of Landsbanki Guernsey ( or allow an independent enquiry ) will it be able to afford the royal couple a wedding pressie ?
Unless of course YOU KNOW WHO manages to squeeze an invitation and a chance for a photo opportunity and a few more air miles…..
Shall we be writing..” Guernsey is the only administration not to have sent…..”

I can’t help but laugh when people suggest that the mere presence of the monarchy somehow stops the tide of repression in our nation. Does anyone really believe old Queen Liz is the mighty dam that prevents the Bolsheviks seizing Whitehall?

That said, although I don’t fawn over the royals with blinkered eyes like Expat80, I’m not a staunch republican either as I think the monarchy does some good – not as much as the likes of Expat80 think, but more than the hardcore republicans believe.

I do think it’s high time they climbed down from their high horse though. For starters the nonsense about protocol when our Bailiff tried to help Princess Anne is from a bygone era and should be consigned to history.

In fairness Prince William does seem to be cut from a slightly less starchy cloth than the old guard, so perhaps there is some hope for them yet. Perhaps he can start by having a low key wedding, thus showing some solidarity with a population struggling with financial austerity measures.

I`m a royalist in that I believe we need a monarchy for the worldwide attention and money it brings to Britain but please don`t label me as one of the idiots who will be drivelling and drooling over this wedding. Two youngsters are getting married so what`s new, it happens every day somewhere.

It`s so good of the Queen to give her subjects the day off isn`t it? What about the retired, redundant or out of work people? It will be just another day like every other day or is Her Majesty`s Government going to give each person in this situation a bonus payment of, say, £50 as compensation for not wasting the economy`s time.
