A PARTY-GOER nearly lost his life after his fancy dress costume caught fire, engulfing him in flames and leaving him desperate for help.

Peter Buck, 35, survived, but was left with severe burns on his hands and across his body, including his face and chest.

Now a month on, he wants to warn others of the dangers of playing with fire, home-made costumes and how important it is people know the firefighters’ mantra of Stop, Drop and Roll.

The client administrator also paid tribute to the quick-thinking actions of his friend, off-duty firefighter Paul Bisson, who was dressed as Jesus Christ, for saving him from the flames.

Super news that this guy is on the mend. But his rescuer dressed as Jesus, surely that’s nothing other than blasphemy?

Veritas – in contrast I think this story is great! Jesus himself used irony and hyperbole when teaching and as a Christian I prefer to see this story as a bit of a modern day parable – a retelling of the parable of the lost sheep.

OK so dressing up as Jesus is a bit irreverent but look at it like this: a man is in mortal danger when suddenly “Jesus” comes in and plucks him from the flames. Don’t you see the delicious irony? Mr Buck was even dressed like a sheep for goodness sakes…you couldn’t make it up!! :-)

If anything, this is a great opportunity for us Christians to communicate the Christian message – not to mention promote fire safety – with a true story and a bit of humour.

Being a Christian doesn’t mean we have to lose our sense of humour – on the contrary we should be the happiest people around!

I had an experience some years ago, wearing a similar pantomine mask to the ones photographed complete with the beard like the one on the right,i set off for my local on a dark windy November evening, then being a chain smoker i became quite wound up at not being able to light up,at the same time having to rebuke remarks being made about my Silver painted wellies by kids at the Saints rd roundabout, i quickened my pace, knowing soon i could still light up at the Bar,a Range Rover left the other smaller Hotel nearby during my efforts to tuck myself in to the hedge the Mask became dislodged,i was knocked down on the ground badly twisting my ankle, the Landlord didn’t even stop

Paul, many years ago I was invited to a fancy dress party with the theme, come as the person you consider to be the most famous man/woman in the world. I decided to come as Jesus, with large cross et al; Some of the people in attendance decided I was blasphemous and left the party letting everyone know, in loud voices their reasons for going. The hostess took it all in good spirit with quips about could I provide water from the wine etc….but she kindly asked me to park my cross outside as she felt it might damage her wallpaper….the irony of course was that as an atheist amongst many christians at that party I was the only one in attendance who reckoned Jesus was probably the most famous man in the world….just thought you’d find this little story interesting.

I’d be surprised if He didn’t have a sense of humour; made in his image and all that. I doubt he’s as uptight as the Christians would have you believe; don’t fret, Peter will be fine, I’m sure that’s way down the list of sins.

Vic – It’s a sad truth that, although our faith is a serious business I’m afraid us Christians do take ourselves far too seriously at times. Sometimes I think we try to be more holy than God! Sadly, if Jesus himself had turned up to that party he would have probably had a similar reaction – perhaps you could’ve had a conversation with him whilst us Christians grumbled outside?!

I think it’s pretty clear from the Bible that Jesus was a pretty amicable person who had a sense of humour and enjoyed a party. He rebuked his disciples for sending kids away who wanted to speak to him, went to parties with tax collectors and prostitutes and turned water into wine at a wedding party. He sounds like a pretty interesting guy to be around to be honest, hardly boring and uptight.

Neil, it is probably my slow day down here on the farm, but I don’t really undserstand why Peter, who was dressed as Larry the Lamb, should have any concerns about fire & brimstone…can you expand on that one please?

Paul Le Page, what you write is good. Only, one should also make it clear that Jesus did not approve if the wrong things that the tax collectors and prostitutes did. As an example he said to the woman caught in adultery: “Go in peace and SIN NO MORE”. (Emphasis mine).

Therefore, as Christians, we should love the sinner but hate their sin. I do confess, in the past we Christians haven`t always got this right.

Hi Paul…nailed as always, good strong points and an understanding of your fellow travellers…the real Jesus, and me, as impersonator, at that party reminds me of a Woody Allen story…he had shot a moose and tied it to the front of his car before going to a fancy dress party…on the way the moose revived, having only been stunned…so he took it along to the fancy dress party…the Cohens were also there, dressed as front and back of a moose..when the prizes were given out the Cohens got first prize and the moose got second…is there a parable in there for when two Jesus’s meet at such a party?
Life’s a funny old fella is he not and we should all learn to laugh our way out of it….

Nicky, pray tell, how exactly does a fancy dress party prove the existence of an all poweful God/Jesus….think you might be clutching at straws there to maintain your own status as a believer…such statements do you and your fellow christians no credit at all.

Very true slep. What I was looking to emphasise was your final point – the self-righteousness too often seen among us Christians – note I count myself among this number!

Of course Christians should take a stand on Biblical values. At times though I think we’re very good at telling everyone else what they’re doing wrong whilst ignoring the fact that we’re often far worse in our attitudes and behaviour – the whole “take the plank out of your eye before looking at the speck in your brothers” comes to mind.

It’s quite typical human behaviour actually – knocking others down to make ourelves feel better about ourselves. Problem is that when we measure ourselves up against the standards of God, we all fall woefully short – which is why Jesus came and what the Gospel is all about! :-)

In the meantime, like Vic says, let’s not lose our sense of humour…. :-)
