THERE has been a phenomenal response to an appeal in the Guernsey Press asking islanders to help prevent the spread of cholera in Haiti, according to the founder of charity Bridge 2 Haiti.

Sarah Griffith is travelling to the country tomorrow and in Tuesday’s edition appealed to people to donate a box of rehydration salts or the equivalent cost.

Yesterday, she said the charity was well on its way to receiving the 2,000 boxes of salts she was aiming to collect for a hospital in one of the cholera-struck towns.

And at 11am she had collected nearly enough money to buy two water bowsers – treatment tanks that can provide clean water. She originally aimed to be able to buy one. ‘I’ve been totting up and we’ve nearly got enough for a second bowser, we’re around £300 off,’ she said.
