£800K rise after 40% overspend

THE legal aid budget will next year increase by £800,000.
That follows this year’s predicted 40% overspend.
Treasury had originally budgeted £1.5m. this year but now estimates that the service will cost around £2.1m. – the same as last year.
Treasury minister Charles Parkinson (pictured) said the increased expenditure followed changes due to the way cases involving domestic violence and children were dealt with by the courts.
As a result, the cost of civil legal aid had risen significantly.
