Wave’s broadband trials could offer 250 times the speed

Wednesday 24th November 2010, 2:30PM GMT.

Graeme MillarTHE fibreoptic network trials Wave Telecom is planning for Guernsey will see some households potentially experiencing broadband that is 250 times faster than current speeds.

Graeme Millar, chief executive of Jersey Telecom, Wave’s owner, revealed further details on the trials during an exclusive interview with the Guernsey Press.

‘At the moment, broadband speeds are around 4mbps but because we will be providing gigabit-capable lines to those households on the trial, they will be seeing 250 times faster broadband access.

Mr Millar (pictured) added that the trials were expected to begin in the first quarter of next year and be concentrated on a ‘single dozen of households’, but did not want to say where these might be.

Wow, very exciting. If you believe this your are daft.

    Clever marketing though.

All he has said effectively is that they might run some fibre into a few properties; single mode fibre is capable of Gigabit speeds. Copper is over a short distance! You need to be able to get that traffic off island out on to the internet to your peers. They cannot afford to do this, they are small fry.

There isn’t enough bandwidth off Island to cope with the speeds he has claimed. He is basically treating the public like idiots. You won’t get those speeds for a long time and certainly not from Wave. I admire the positive outlook though.

    Two problems i see.

Firstly it’s never get out to perelle, and secondly and more importantly, theres a huge bottle neck trying to get all this data on and off the island.

    Skeptical

    Just looking at JT’s website.

It’s interesting that they are looking at up to 1Gb in Guernsey when they only offer up to 10Mb Dedicated Business lines in Jersey…

Also they only offer 8Mb in Jersey for ADSL… Would have thought they would need to provide faster services there before here.

Oh well guess we wait and see…
