GUERNSEY Airport is better prepared for icy weather this winter, according to director Colin Le Ray.

He said the airport had bought 10,000 litres of Safegrip Plus, an environmentally safe anti-icing and de-icing liquid.

‘Following the disruptions earlier this year we have tweaked our procedures to help reduce delays,’ he said.

‘Although the anti-icing [liquid] will not prevent us closing in extreme weather conditions – as we still will need to clear the runway – it will allow us to carry out the procedure more effectively.

‘We are still in debate whether to buy more of the chemical. Looking at the current weather forecast, 10,000 litres will be sufficient.’

I’d lol if there was no snow. There’d be like “oh sh.. we just wasted some money on some salt, we don’t have any of that surrounding us, best buy some more expensive salt”

What a farce. 30mm of snow (that’s a mere one and a quarter inches!) at 7am and the airport is shut for 7 hours. Unbelievable. Its not as if was a total surprise either. Snow had been forecast for the south and south west UK for 2 or 3 days and northern France had snow on Friday.
And why no paper plane on Sunday morning?
Why does the airline come to a standstill when we get a sprinkling of snow, especially when its half expected?

Since my last post the papers have duly arrived. Seems as though the freight plane got stuck in Jersey overnight last night and then got ice-bound there this morning, hence the delay while it eventually went to the UK to collect Guernsey’s papers. Nothing to do with Guernsey Airport apparently, so apologies for any unfair criticism from me on that front.

I dont know what the fuss is about salting the runway it just gonna cost us taxpayers money in fines from the airlines that use it. We have a water treatment plant so why not use it

Where are your stats about people leaving in their droves? I’m intrigued and would like to know what facts you base such a comment on.

P B Falla – you’ve written some gems, sir but this one is the pinnacle – I couldn’t stop giggling when I read this.

Well- actually I don’t “see it” and I don’t believe its true at all. Where is your evidence? Its not what I hear at all.

Now, I have no doubt that you might know one or two people who are leaving, but that has always been the case. Guernsey people travel far and wide. But any more so than usual?

I too was wondering where P B Falla got his evidence for the “mass exodus”
I have taken a few flights over the past couple of months and, while the outward flights have had quite a few seats the returning flights are full.
Perhaps is all these tax evaders coming to spend their money! But no they were local people coming back from UK and further afield

People may not be leaving in droves, but I left some years ago, and I have not regretted the decision one bit, my family, my kids have a far better standard of life, options and opportunities, now and in the future, the scenery and life style is phenomenal and all in all it was probably the best decision of our lives.

i was told yesterday, that the reason it took so long to clear, was that although they had 10,000 litres of anti icing fluid, they ordered the sprayer for it only very recently ,and it has not yet arrived !!! Hence the lack of talk from the airport director on how good this stuff is, as it was only a few weeks ago we were told how it would keep the airfield open, no problems!not much good it is kept in the shed as you cannot put it down,
