THE countdown to Christmas began last night with the switch on of the Rotary Tree of Joy.

School pupils Anaya Martel, 9, from Amherst, and five-year-old Ellie Blondel, from Vale Infants, won a colouring competition to turn on the lights of the tree on the Weighbridge Roundabout.

They also won a PlayStation 3 from Sure and £100 in book tokens for their school. They each had to colour in a Christmas scene featuring elves.

This is the sixth year that the SeaGuernsey mast has been used for the Tree of Joy. It marks the start of the local campaign, which collects presents for deprived local children. Islanders can collect tags from various establishments and buy a toy for a child. They will be available from Monday.

This is just a attempt to divert from the real issues of life on guernsey, the summerfield road cobbles, the closing of the grotto, the closing of the flumes, the vandalism of cars, police brutality, financial corruption

islanders wake up and smell the coffee,no wonder people are leaving in the droves

Thats why guernsey is now a uk extension of a chav town

P B Falla, for one I believe the phrase you were grasping for is “hang our heads in shame”.

Aside from this small error, what makes you think that an article documenting the charitable efforts of the Rotary Club at Christmas time is inappropriate? Reporting should not simply be doom and gloom.

Yes there is pressing news regarding more grim subjects, but these are not being omitted from publication because of one story about festive joy.

Whilst I agree that Guernsey has it’s fair share of problems; infact as a Guernsey student who is currently living in an English city, I see more violence on a night out in Guernsey than I do on the mainland, I totally oppose your disenchanted and wholly negative views of our island.

Perhaps a positive contribution to other debates would be more useful than a damning of the more light hearted reporting of island events?

Oh for goodness sakes P B Falla, put a Christmas stocking in it!

It may have escaped your attention that the Rotary Tree of Joy is there to help deprived children, but maybe you’d prefer it if we told them that Santa isn’t coming this year because Guernsey isn’t meeting your expectations?

Not sure if I can detect a hint of sarcasm in PBF’s post, but surprised that no-one has said thatly the money would be better spent on Bowel Cancer screening?
