Guernseyman tops royal promotion course

Lance Corporal Alex Ward receives a trophy from the Countess of Wessex after finishing as the top soldier out of 103 in a six-week leadership course which saw him promoted by the countess, who is the Royal Colonel of his regiment, 5th Battalion The Rifles.
A GUERNSEY soldier has been promoted by Her Royal Highness, the Countess of Wessex.
Rifleman Alex Ward, 20, of Germany-based 5th Battalion The Rifles, is now a lance corporal after finishing top in a tough six-week course to gain vital leadership skills.
The Countess, who is the Royal Colonel of 5 Rifles, was in Germany visiting her battalion as it prepares for possible deployment to Afghanistan next year.
Lance Corporal Ward, who finished first out of 103 students, joined the Army in 2008 and has completed a tour in Iraq.
