A MUM-to-be who was trapped in the snow and about to go into labour has thanked two islanders for rushing to her rescue.
Speaking for the first time since her ordeal during the Arctic conditions earlier this month, and holding her safely delivered new baby, a relieved Philippa Worthington said she didn’t dare think about what might have happened.
The 20-year-old was due to be induced on Thursday 2 December but overnight snow left her and fiance Tim Coke marooned at their home at New Place, Vauvert, St Peter Port.
When he realised he couldn’t manage to drive her safely to hospital because of the treacherous conditions Miss Worthington’s mum, Kay, put out a radio appeal for help.

A bit OTT isn’t it? It’s less than a mile.

Thursday wasn’t even that bad, was the man scared? I drove roughly 200 miles during that week and the only issue I had was having to hedge my car after some idiot came speeding down a lane..

Normally I would agree 100% with you Dean but this time I’m going to play devil’s advocate.
A young couple expecting their first child will undoubtedly be going through a nerve-racking time with a roller coaster of of emotions. I think they can be excused not thinking objectively this once!

Depends where you live, Vauvert a steep hill & how would you get from there to PEH?
Thaw started for me late Fri Night, was still freezing earlier!

Hi there Guys
I am the Granny who put the “appeal” out on Island FM which was so kindly answered by Suzanne and James.
We live in New Place – which is on a hill – and which was covered in ice and snow on that particular Thursday (2nd December). It was important to get them to hospital a) in one piece, obviously and b) before 8 a.m. that morning. Please note, there were no buses running to the hospital then; and there were no taxis running when we telephoned them; and my son in law’s car would not have made it down our road, let alone up the Ruettes Braye.
No SB – my future son in law is not scared, and certainly not reckless – which is why he very thankfully accepted the lift on behalf of him and my daughter to the hospital. And yes Dean, less than a mile may be the case – but would you have walked your pregnant wife/girlfriend to the hospital if you were unable to drive them there and haden’t been offered a lift?
Anyway – when the Press approached my family (after hearing the request on Island FM) to get their side of the story, they were only too pleased to be able to thank Suzanne and James for their help. OTT? maybe a little in the write up … but we were just thankful that Guernsey is still an island community and people are willing to help one another out.

Dean and SB, have you ever been up New Place at Vauvert (their given address)? The road is very very steep and not easy to walk or drive down in good weather! And you have obviously never been heavily pregnant either!

for gods sakes it’s an island, you can have 4″ of snow in the Forest and no snow at L’Ancresse urg….why can’t people just be grateful, there are some good people out there, someone does a good turn and they are labelled “do gooders” hope you don’t get ill whilst there is any snow or ice around!!!! put yourself in there place, then think before you speak! congrats on your new baby x

i do apologise for calling the people in the 4×4 “do gooders” as i know they were not referred to as that….me just getting a little carried away i think!

I agree with you both, and yes I would feel uncomfortable driving my girlfriend in similar conditions. My comment was more about the reporting being OTT, as sarnia expat has also pointed out.

@Dean – nothing new there eh?!

How about congrats to these proud parents and their lovely baby. Stop the “what ifs” and so on.
