Own up or face prosecution is tax choice
Tuesday 14th December 2010, 2:29PM GMT.
A THREE-MONTH amnesty is being offered to islanders who have tried to evade paying income tax or not disclosed the right information.
The income tax irregularities scheme will start on 1 January and any individual or business will be able to set their affairs in order without the threat of penalties or prosecution.
The scheme is open to everyone and will not target one area or group of people.
Director of income tax Rob Gray (pictured)said that his ability to investigate suspected tax evasion had increased over the last few years because more intelligence was available through third parties, tax information exchange agreements, the police and the Guernsey Border Agency.

Actually not disclosed any info for last 3 or 4 tax years as despite all help I asked for over a non disclosure it was a no goer!
They knew what it was, I did not. The higher up the ranks contacted the really ruder & nastier they got. Eventually they managed to tell me the info held by them on me could not be disclosed due to privacy laws! So I got a hefty fine
PHHTTT How can you can you disclose (or dispute) anything you have no idea of?
Hoping there are a lot more tax officers in there now who can help rather than hinder tax payments!!

Soph:
By law they have to disclose any information held about you to you. Data Protection Act says so.

Soph – not sure what you are trying to say really? If you had a matter that concerned you they have to disclose as it is about you, otherwise absolutely, they shouldn’t divulge other peoples information.
I think a 3 month amnesty should be applauded.
It might be beneficial if the Director also stipulated some examples of how they can assist those that come forward, i.e. arranging a window to pay agreed debts, i.e. over a 6 month period instead of 1 lump sum immediately, for those with significant debts and an inability to pay.
It is all about compliance and modelling the structure of this to ensure those who are able to pay do, and those that don’t have the opportunity – prosecution is a last resort.
Well done income tax Dept for a sound initiative.

It is a different story if they owe you money getting blood from a stone is easier !

I still haven’t told them I make a most of my living through selling things on my online e-commerce website. Am I meant to? I quite like not paying too much income tax at the moment, suits my life brilliantly.

You are wrong,i have experince of meetings with Mr gray for other people and he would not reveal his sources
Report abuse
Mr G, its quite simple really. Tell them all your income gets paid into your Jersey account, to avoid high local taxes.
Its all above board, not evasion or avoidance as Jersey is not a tax haven.
See how they like it that way around.

Thanks for all replies folks
It was my last 2 telephone conversations with Income Tax that felt really bad. Like I wanted to pay but they wouldn’t help me with my mistake
So I will make out my last 3 years’ Tax forms with a big grudge on my shoulder!
Mr G take care, declare your income but costs too! (Like the horrendous monthly cost of BB)
Else those in income tax will be chasing you too
They have for PayPal sites like Ebay etc
I always did declare on line earnings, know they caught up with a few ppl for that!
An honest felt cheat by income tax people!
Maybe someone from there could reply with an apology or even an answer to what I missed!
Falling out of love with Govt departments. Kick managers out and let the underdogs move up
Will save money that will!

….and one of our main industries over here is…………?
oh yes, TAX AVOIDANCE/EVASION (no need to correct me, simply delete as conscience dictates).
The irony. Absolutely hilarious.

Mr G
Whether or not you have a Jersey account is irrelevant. You are still taxable in Guernsey on any income generated here and it is illegal not to declare it.
What would have ideally happened, is that you would have announced to the Income Tax Office your plans prior to trading, or in the early days of your trading.
I would imagine if you gave the tax office a call and notified them very shortly, if you havnt been trading too long they will not mind either I should think.
I would recommened going to an accountants office to have them prepare your accounts, so you know the exact amount of tax due on your income. They should be able to help you from there. From a cost of the accountancy services point of view I would recommend a local firm rather than one of the big international firms.
