Conservationist moves threaten our trawlermen

Andy Le Prevost from SeafreshGUERNSEY’S trawling industry could be dead within 10 years if local fishermen are cut off from Alderney’s and Sark’s fishing grounds, a local wholesaler is warning.

Seafresh owner Andy Le Prevost (pictured) said if Commerce and Employment did not move to acquire ‘grandfather rights’ on local fishing licences the effect would be devastating.

‘People need to be aware that the areas being spoken about are some of the richest areas for local trawlers.

‘Sark and Alderney amount to 90% of our trawling grounds. Without them, there is no trawling industry.’

    Alderney Angler

The way Alderney is being trawled and netted there’s going to be few fish left-regular visiting anglers have seen a decline in the number and size of fish and are now refusing to spend their cash coming here. This is having a knock on effect in the accommodation/shops/pubs sector.I’m sorry but there needs to be conservation-there’s a consultation process happening here regarding fishing(commercial/charter/recreational)-hopefully concensus will be reached.Unfortunately there are polarised views so I think it will be a difficult situation for Alderney States to thrash out. Here’s hoping for the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lets get this twelve mile limit sorted out why is it taking so long, i see large factory ships out on the west coast of Guernsey mainly fishing for scallops and they are wiping out huge amounts and its are local fishing fleet which will suffer in the long run. the states of Guernsey should be pushing to get this sorted but as usual its forgotten and future local fishermen will suffer.
