Extra traffic a hangar worry

Thursday 16th December 2010, 11:30AM GMT.

Deputy David De LisleIF PLANS for a new aircraft hangar are approved it will give rise to a tremendous amount of traffic congestion in the area, according to a western deputy.

David De Lisle (pictured) was speaking yesterday following the news that there are new plans to build the hangar on green belt land to the west of the existing Aero Club structure.

Those behind the application say space for private aircraft is limited at the airport and looks set to reduce further.

But Deputy De Lisle said he was surprised the proposal had been made.

‘a tremendous amount of traffic congestion in the area’…
Deputy De Lisle reminds me of Deputy Bill Bell ( I think it was) who some years ago pleaded with the States to close down La Hougue Jehannet Road which splits the two parts of the electricity station as he had visions of his staff getting mown down on a daily basis by passing traffic !

Stick to the rare grasshoppers Mr De Lisle

Could someone explain WHY an extra hangar would cause traffic congestion? I thought a hangar was for planes, not cars!

The real concern here is why anyone, either with commercial or individual interests would be allowed to build on land designated as GREEN BELT.

A hangar with half a dozen small aircraft kept in it is hardly going to make much difference to the traffic around the Airport.

If you don’t want to be near aircraft don’t purchase a property near the Airport, it’s as simple as that.

Deputy De Lisle’s knowledge of aviation is truly embarrassing.

I do wish we could have just one local debate where the protagonists didn’t resort to ridiculous hyperbole.

On one hand we have Deputy de Lisle suggesting that building one aircraft hanger will turn the surrounding roads into the local equivalent of the M25; flip the coin and we’re told that the same hanger is “essential” for the airport.

I cannot believe either is true.

Respect for property and property rights is a basic human right. If you cause injurous effects to property and surroundings you should compensate. Stuff them because they’re are near the airport is discriminatory. Respect for property must be applied to neighbours of the Mont Cuet quarry.

Having a small hangar built on an airfield is hardly causing injurous effects to property and surroundings.

If any damage is caused to property I totally agree with you that compensation should be made.

However, I stand by my comment that you shouldn’t purchase a property next to an airport if you do not expect it to have some effect on your life.

If you lived in the area before the airfield was constructed you have every right to complain, If you moved to the area after it was built that is your choice and nobody elses.

If land has been zoned for green belt does that mean that we can all decide there are essential buildings that provide a precedent over the laws of the land. Surely the “hangar” developers bought the land and were advised by their legal team and surveyors that building in this area would be highly unlikely. At the same time they would not have paid the the “development” premium price for the land. This sounds like someone trying it on!

    Geo is absolutely right.

I live in La Planque Lane and have no problem whatsoever with this. The road’s already got a load of aircraft hangars in it, which block the aircraft noise nicely. The airport is absolutely vital for Guernsey. If there’s no room to expand it without going onto greenbelt land then there’s been a lack of foresight with the zoning.

I also doubt that the hangar will have much of a visual impact. It’s going to be next to the Aeroclub hangar, which can’t even be seen from the road.

Deputy De Lisle’s comment is absolutely ridiculous, but why let facts get in the way of a dumb comment. For starters they already have planes at the airport, so it’s not going to make any difference to traffic in the general area. At most there will be a few extra cars a day in the lane itself.

There’s already a reasonably large amount of traffic in the lane. The Aeroclub carpark creates a fair bit of traffic. There’s a vehicle repair centre in the road. There’s also a lot of traffic to the back entrance of the airport where the fire station is. When the airport firemen change shift you get one convoy of cars going in and another going out a bit later, usually much too fast.
