Extra 40 bring-banks to help with Christmas waste recycling

EFFORTS are being made to help cope with the Christmas rush of recycling.

About 40 extra bring banks are being placed at the eight main recycling sites – St Martin’s Garage, Cobo Village, Vazon, Safeway, Salerie Corner, L’Eree, the Longfrie Inn and Chouet. There will also be additional cardboard facilities at Safeway, Chouet, Vazon and St Martin’s.

Deputy Public Services minister Scott Ogier said he hoped the extra bins would make recycling easier.

‘Christmas can mean a lot more waste generated so we are keen that islanders continue their good work and recycle as much as they possibly can,’ he said. ‘We need to keep up the progress that we have made in recent years and we hope the additional facilities and promotion will help with that.’

And again, just like the airport open on Xmas day! PSD looks like they’re doing all they can – extra banks, pleading for HELP from islanders to not just leave stuff all over the floors as they can only cope with so many collections.

And nothing. I bet £10 to Help a Guernsey Child that one of the first stories after Christmas is the problems at the bring banks – and that there are loads of comments on here complaining about useless States Works and PSD.

Mark my words – said it here first!!!

    You’re almost right BtF.
What will happen is, PSD will provide 40 bins and extra collections will be paid for.
After Christmas, someone will point out that PSD could have managed with 30 extra bins.

Cue “Outraged” people slagging off PSD for “spending like its a bottomless pit” and telling stories of lorry drivers “raking it in” by working overtime at Christmas.

The bins are often full, so why not leave at least some of the extra ones there after Christmas?

Let’s be optimistic about this and hope that the extra bins and extra collections will make a big difference. I hope that everyone makes a real effort to reduce the amount of waste entering M.C. in comparison to last year.

Remember that all the foil, including all those disposable foil trays on mince pies or the ones used for cooking, can be recycled. Wash and then squish them into orange sized balls and put them in with the tins.

Also aerosol cans can go in with tins too.

And Plastic Nos 5 will be recycled in new bins come January. That’s yogurt pots, cream & ice-cream containers, lots of plastic lids, flower pots. Look for a number 5 in the recycling triangle or the letters PP. Start collecting now and hold onto them until the bins arrive.
