THE proprietors of a popular Town restaurant have fled the island owing approaching £60,000, it emerged yesterday.

Restaurateurs Mel and Dana Brown ran Brown’s at 15, Mansell Street, St Peter Port, which closed suddenly in October.

More details were disclosed in the Royal Court about what triggered the couple’s sudden departure.

Representing The Old Quarter Restaurant in an unusual application before the Ordinary Division, Advocate Peter Ferbrache said the Browns had ‘disappeared’ in August.

Er this £60,000 is a guess isn’t it. But don’t let facts get in the way of a GP headline eh?

So there appears to be no safeguards in Guernsey for people to set up a business, run up debt then do a runner? Great news for suppliers….

Blimey, old Peter Ferbrache is becoming a bit of an expert on fleeing restaurateurs by the look of it. One minute he’s defending one, next minute he’s chasing one (the same one that he initially defended!) and now he’s defending another two!

No doubt he has gone to work with Howard Holland in Spain.

This is starting to be in vogue for Guernsey.

Many will be reluctant to lend on accounts as a consequence.

The law must do everything possible to nip this in the bud or the island will see this trend become more common place.

Those wishing to start a new business will find things further out of reach due to a dishonest few.

Good people suffer apart from the offenders themselves it would seem.

The island’s reputation can’t afford to be tarnished by those that feel they are above the law & out of reach for the systems in place.

There is little stopping others jumping ship in future. Justice is needed here to send out the right message.

I often wondered how they could afford to do a three course lunch for a tenner – it seems thye couldn’t
