A must-have Guernsey book finally made it onto the shelves after its chaotic journey came to an end yesterday.

Islanders were eventually able to get their hands on a copy of Guernsey Coast, after the 3,000 copies finally made it to the island despite a journey haunted by delays, Customs problems and bad weather.

The book was due to arrive from Europe in early November and vouchers handed to those with pre-orders said copies would finally be ready to collect by 9am yesterday.

But yet again the delivery ran into trouble as rough seas prevented the eagerly awaited cargo getting any further than Jersey, where the ferry Commodore Goodwill was diverted, leaving a queue of 30 angry people waiting on the steps of the Press Shop.

I never heard of this book but am very interested. What type of book is it, history, picture, or a novel?

It’s a local book, written by a local person, why was’t it printed by a local company?

Having read the article (today 24 Dec) I feel that Mr Trump’s father-in-law’s Xmas surprise may have been subjected to a ‘cat-out-of-the-bag’ moment…….

Mr G: the UK comapny may have been better – the world does not owe Guernsey a living.

Pillsbury, the company was some random place in Europe – probably a cost saving technique by Mr Batiste’s publisher.

And whats wrong in trying to save costs?
and just spurting out wild guesses as to why they got them printed there means nothing.

A serious question, does anyone know how much it is to actually publish a book over here? Presumably the ones by Yvonne Ozannes and the Bloney Good Times ones were published by paying to do this, rather than have the book snapped up by a publisher? We used to call these vanity presses, but don’t think this is a fair name really!

bcb, what’s wrong with trying to save costs? Let me think… this book was severely delayed.

It got here too late for Christmas presents for relatives and friends living in other parts of the world, as you are most likely to buy a book about Guernsey for people who do not live here.

I said probably it was printed in a foreign country, to save costs for Mr Batiste’s publisher, would’ve made more sense for a Guernsey book to be printed in Guernsey helping out a local firm whilst doing so, in these tough economic times.

Gary – it’s a book about the entire coastline of Guernsey, section by section, and the history thereof. Very interesting when it came out as a series in the Press, I’m sure you’d like it. I found the history and what went on along the various coastlines extremely interesting.

Thanks so much Matti. I will order one. I come back to visit older relatives ( which I love very much ) each year and like to get out and see and do things between sitting in their houses and drinking endless cups of tea. Although I live off shore now my heart belongs to Guernsey. It always will. Thank you.

    It’s a hard back book Mr G!!!

Nobody on Guernsey can make hardback books, what a load of drivel – “it would have made sense for a Gsy book to be printed in Gsy” what? and then sent off Island to be bound?

    Trolling AGAIN!!!!

Ok Ed, didn’t realise hardbacks can’t be printed locally. Why not get them printed in the UK or Jersey then?

Would’ve arrived sooner, the publisher was trying to save a few pennies me thinks!

Mr G if you read the story and the reasons behind the delay it wouldn’t have made any difference where the book was printed and as Ed has pointed out it couldn’t be printed in Gsy.

Customs and rough seas seem to have been the main problems.

Stop trolling and do something useful like the dishes.

It’s a very good book somewhat spoilt by poor proof reading, lack of research and repetitive use of the same pictures. Worth buying for anyone interested in the island’s history.
