CELEBRITIES including Sir Roger Moore, Joanna Lumley and John Nettles have pledged their support to the campaign to improve Guernsey’s animal welfare legislation.

Animal lover Hayley James hoped to give the Promoting Animal Welfare campaign a boost by enlisting the support of the rich and famous.

Miss James spent the last few months contacting the agents of celebrities either with links to the island or who have campaigned for animal rights.

She has received not only letters of support, but items that could be auctioned to raise funds for Paw.

Since the excellent Press coverage on this subject, I’ve been asked by those who are following and supporting the PAW campaign if there is somewhere they can read the celebrity /charity messages. Certainly! It is my pleasure to publish the transcripts as follows:

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wrote:

    Dear Promoting Animal Welfare (PAW),

We wish you the best of luck in your efforts to modernise anti cruelty laws in Guernsey. The animals of Guernsey deserve our respect and consideration and they certainly deserve a voice in legislation.
We applaud your endeavors to help protect animals and establish their right to live free from pain and suffering at human hands.
For all you do for the animals, thank you so much.
    Sincerely,

    The PETA UK team

    Joanna Lumley OBE wrote:

    Dear Sue,

The very best of luck with your petition. Your campaign for animal welfare in Guernsey has my full support; I am ever grateful to the great writer Henry Beston who had this to say:

“For the animal shall not be measured by man. In a world older than ours, they move finished and complete, gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not underlings; they are other nations, caught with us in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendour and travail of the earth.”

I hope that the glorious island of Guernsey will introduce laws which will protect all its creatures; the sooner the better, for them and for us all as well.
    With my warmest good wishes,

    Joanna Lumley.

    Dear Hayley

Of course I would like to wish everyone involved with PAW the best of luck in your work to ensure our animal friends receive better treatment.

It greatly saddens me to see or hear of any mistreatment, and I wonder how the people so needlessly inflicting or standing by without saying anything would feel if the tables were turned?

I enclose a signed book in the hope it may help in some way

Thanks for your email and apologies again for the delay in getting back to you. Now that we have our new Public Affairs manager in place, we will be contacting The Guernsey States directly regarding the development of legislation in support of animal welfare.
Thank you again for bringing this legislative issue to our attention.
