Islanders should notice ‘bricks’ appearing on shop counters and in offices early in 2011.

They are a new type of collection box for the Les Bourgs Hospice redevelopment appeal.

Les Bourgs launched its major funding initiative in February after planning permission was given for the demolition of Andrew Mitchell House and its replacement by a purpose-designed building.

The redevelopment will include seven ground-floor single bedrooms with en-suite facilities, three specially equipped bathrooms and wet rooms. Also included is a quiet/overnight room for relatives and a lounge where family gatherings can be held.

This sounds wonderful – I hope islanders will continue to give generously. This building needs to go up as quickly as possible to get people the best care possible in their time of need, and Les Bourgs will always need more funds to care for people in the best possible way.

Perhaps the people of Guernsey could now be encouraged to “Buy a brick of Les Bourgs”. Take the full-price of the new build (£4m?) and divide by the approximate number of bricks (60 k?) – £66? Round it up, that’s still just a night in a cheap hotel, or a month socialising for an active couple. A company could buy a meter squared wall! Les Bourgs could give out a certificate of thanks for the companies’ lobbies or the person’s hallway. That’s a certificate to be proud of!

People like to have, and are good at visualising, something tangible to achieve. Not just “I’m saving to give to Les Bourgs” – “I’m saving up sixty-six pounds, to buy a brick of the new Les Bourgs”.

Lastly – I will never stop being grateful to Les Bourgs for taking care of my mother (Jill Le Prevost, née Robins) when she was ill, allowing us to spend precious time alone together. Thank you very much if you have ever supported them.
