Open market licence auction ‘could make island millions’
Friday 31st December 2010, 1:00PM GMT.
OPEN MARKET licences should be auctioned off each year to allow substantial new properties to be developed, according to Maximuscle founder Zef Eisenberg.
The businessman (pictured) made the suggestion in response to news that the future of the open market will be reviewed as part of a public consultation due to start in the next few weeks.
He made clear his view that any move to abolish the open market would have serious repercussions for the island’s economy.
Mr Eisenberg said the current system had served the island well and he would like to see the States maintain what worked, while adding to it.

Where are they going to build more houses for these foreigners? It’s tough getting on the property market for young local people.
The island hasn’t got anymore room for building development.

Auction them off…. Great idea, then maybe we can split the proceeds with those departing to give them a head start elswhere!

Why would any sane person want to encourage more people to move here when the island is already overcrowded. My friend had to move to France because she couldn’t afford to raise her son here.

Developers won’t be happy until every square inch is subdivided and built on. The ONLY thing they are interested in is money.

You are right Mr G, the island has no more room for building development. So what usually happens? Judging by what has taken place in other countries over countless years existing properties are built ‘upwards’, hence such monstrosities as the countless high-rise cities that exist all over the world, a trend that should not be allowed to happen in Guernsey!
But the real problem is world population growth, and that includes Guernsey. We humans are killing the planet through over-proliferation of our own kind. We are multiplying like rabbits. In doing so we are destroying our world with pollution of all kinds. So what do we do about that both in relation to Guernsey and to the rest of the world?

No No No.
The Island won’t make money, but it will ruin the little we have left.
We had enough of these spivs as war ended. they came with tales of how sorry they were for us-
Souvenirs were bought up and later sold elsewhere. the Island made nothing.
Then all sorts of things were bought up- G
Guernsey was left with those we have now,
The sooner they go the better_ then Guernsey can settle to make it’s own way.
Instead of giving reading space in the ‘Press’ give him room on a boat or plane, what ever get rid of him.
Give in to his wishes and you’ll be sorry for the remainder of your days.

A Yorkshireman.
Having come to Guernsey on holiday for more than 30 years, I have frequently said to my Guernsey friends, the States should build specifically for their own people and spend less time on outsiders.
YOUR OWN PEOPLE FIRST,say I.

If “substantial new properties” means building ever-increasingly large homes this is unsustainable. Gandhi said “Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s need, but not every man’s greed.”
