Pubs, clubs and taxis gear up for big night

Friday 31st December 2010, 2:29PM GMT.

TaxiPUBS and clubs are making the final preparations for the busiest party night of the year.

Extra police will be on patrol in Town and on the Bridge tonight and head of operations Chief Inspector Nigel Taylor asked people to be sensible.

‘We would ask people to make sure that they are enjoying themselves and not to overindulge.’

Taxis might be in short supply later but CI Taylor warned that the police would be on the lookout for drink-drivers and said people should take the same precautions they would on any other night out.

Just use a cheap taxi like you find on social networking sites such as Facebook. Cheaper, and generally on time rather than the conventional taxi.

If you take Mr G’s advice just make sure your driver doesn’t have an accident, as driving for reward on a private policy invalidates their motor insurance.

Mr Gs comments continue to be published despite his recommendations being ileagle. This is guernsey, this is an opinion that shouldn’t be published.

I occasionally use these cheap taxis you see on Facebook and the like. I refuse to pay more than their petrol costs and the drivers are always happy to accept that as it means that their insurance is still covered.

To give money for petrol is not illegal, to pay for the actual act of driving is. Scarlet Pimpernel and Bart need to sort out their facts.

I was chatting with a barman yesterday lunchtime who told me that New Year’s Eve wasn’t as big a deal since the millennium and that many people stayed in and had house parties rather than stump up the extra cost of going out on NYE.

I wonder whether he is right. Were the town pubs busy?

What did I say, GF? Driving for REWARD invalidates the policy. Giving money for petrol is not a reward as it only covers the cost (actually less as it doesn’t factor in wear and tear, insurance etc).

I’d still be interested to know how you calculate the exact amount of petrol used for your journey though?

Don’t forget, insurance companies just love finding ways to not pay out on claims – so if they got wind of what was going on, don’t be surprised if they decided not to pay out. It’s a small island and news carries…..

It’s not a completely exact science, but I look at their odometer and their petrol tank, from there I can work out how many miles makes that much of a tank.

From that I divide the number of miles by the usage of petrol shown by the fuel gauge and then from there I offer them the sum of my distance in petrol use.

Very clever indeed GF but it must be a pretty long journey home to have a tangible effect on the fuel guage!
