A MINE disaster thousands of miles away has had a devastating effect on a local family.

John Duggan was quietly watching the news one morning when he realised that the explosion on the west coast of New Zealand was in the mine where his youngest brother, Chris, 31, worked.

The blast happened on Friday 19 November at Pike River coal mine, near to Greymouth and Mr Duggan’s home town of Runanga.

What followed meant that he and his family have been left still seeking closure.
