SMALLER businesses fear trade could suffer if cheques are phased out.

Window cleaners, milkmen and newsagents are among those who are concerned about losing the payment method.

Brendan Le Moigne, who owns Scott’s Window Cleaning Services, said most of his customers paid by cheque.

Milk retailer Brian Martel also said around 70% of customers still paid by cheque. He said while around 15% did now pay by interbank transfers it would be difficult for older people to make that change.

Another nothing story, cheques are not be phased out till at least 2018, and only if a alternative is made available

As for old, well as the likes of Belgium, Germany, Switzerland where cheques are rare I suspect unless they don’t have any old people there is a usefully alternative!

    Hello

Maybe more people will pay with cash? I’m told there is some concern within HMRC in the UK about this.

I understand there is a proposal for a voucher type system, similar to a cheque but we’ll have to put on the Payee’s sort code and account number so the payment can be processed electronically by the banks and negate the need to the physical movement of cheques within the clearly system.

    It’s too early panic.

Vic – George Torode was referring to the words of Revelation 13.

As for 2018, no comment. Sorry to be a party pooper old pal but too many people have come a cropper claiming insider knowledge of the book of Revelation. I have no wish to join their ranks!

Why not use internet banking? Ideally suited for this sort of thing and the businesses would save money in not being charged by the banks for having the cheques cleared plus any monies are not ‘lost’ in the system for a few days making the banks profits on interest. Before anybody starts about people not having access to the internet, I would imagine most do presently and more will have by 2018, for any elderly people not comfortable I’m sure they have family members who could help them.
