ONE of Town’s most eye-catching views will be lost forever if plans for the former Smith Street post office are approved, the National Trust has said.

President Martin Ozanne said Town would not be the same if plans to put an extra floor on top of Nelson Place, blocking the view between Smith Street and Forest Lane, were accepted.

‘The developers are suggesting the views, especially around the war memorial, will be lost but that they can be regained from locations around St James’ Street and Ann’s Place ,’ he said.

‘What is clear is that while the views from these locations are still there, and so in a sense can be “regained”, the one that strikes the eye on the approach to Town along Ann’s Place will be lost for-ever.’

As a resident in Le Canichers who will shortly be losing the views from my house because of new developments being built I will be following the outcome of this campaign quite closely. I have been informed that notwithstanding that the views are an important element of the planning consideration I actually have no right to them and cannot stop any development going ahead because of this.

This is one of the views in town that people cherish. It would mark a sad moment if we let financial interest overule the reasons why this is such a great place to live. Is anyone organising a petition ?
