Retailers are cool with Dairy’s fresh delivery

IT IS up to the States or the Guernsey Dairy to insist on refrigerated delivery of milk to shops, retailers have said.
A review of the dairy industry said there were concerns that fresh milk products were presently being distributed to major retailers in un-refrigerated vehicles, with the exception of Marks & Spencer, whose milk was refrigerated in line with company policy.
The review recommended that legislation be brought in to ensure that all deliveries of milk and milk products to major retailers are carried out using refrigerated vehicles.
Sandpiper area manager Kenny McDonald said that, due to current legislation and restrictions on distributors, Checkers had to take the milk from a roundsman who had the control of the zone in which a store was located.

We used to have our milk delivered but when we discovered our doorstep deliveries were being made around 2′ish in the morning (meaning the milk was on the doorstep until at least 6.30, when we got up) we stopped. We had wondered why our milk wasn’t keeping well. In the summer when the temperature stays around 14c at night, this is the worst possible start to the delivered milk. Having refrigerated trucks would not have helped in this situation.

Milk doesn’t need to be refrigerated constantly, just kept cool. Normally it’s delivered in the back of a small pickup with a roof, never had any milk going off before.
Regarding M&S, that’s utter b/s I’ve seen the open back milk delivery truck in their car park delivering milk, it’s not refrigerated.
Why would a small island like Guernsey need a refrigerated truck anyway? How’s that going to save money? If they had loads of comments saying the milk’s off then fair enough, but nobody’s complaining.

This sounds like one of Baldrick’s cunning plans
Bring in a law which makes it too expensive for lots of small milk retailers to operate under and Bingo, you are then left with just a big operator

Something needs to be done to stop the Cartel of milk distribution. The review has come up with several good points – refrigeration of dairy products being one of them.

Hi.
I used to do rounds and during the summer it is warm but not enough to turn an early delivery bad. So long as it was taken in during the morning and not left out all day.
2 am is a ittle extreme to be honest and if in doubt, why not leave a small cool box out!!!!
GD.

Nobby, are you serious? Milk doesn’t need refrigeration for short journeys, heck people leave it out on the table whilst they’re having breakfast.
We’ll have to pay for it with increased milk prices, I doubt you’d want that.
