Big two supermarkets would welcome direct Dairy dealings

RETAILERS have largely welcomed the recommendation that the Dairy should work directly with shops in future.
Stores such as Checkers and the Co-op currently buy milk from roundsmen, who distribute it after buying it from the Dairy at a gate price.
The independent report released on Monday said that the Dairy had failed to link commercially with major supermarkets and shops, creating a ‘dysfunction of market management, promotion and service, which would not be tolerated elsewhere’.
At the moment, there are 26 distributors who deliver milk to shops, doorsteps and caterers.
