Harbour diver to check out suspect ‘depth charge’
Friday 14th January 2011, 2:29PM GMT.
THE Harbour Authority is waiting to examine a suspect device that was found on the seabed off St Peter Port.
Harbour master Captain Peter Gill said that while the device was within his jurisdiction – namely a half-mile radius of the harbour mouth – it did not pose a danger to shipping.
‘It’s in an area where there can be no trawling or fishing, so there is no hazard to port users,’ he said.
The device, which was first reported about two years ago and has moved with the tide, has been reported to the commander of the Royal Naval Southern Clearance Dive Unit.

doesn’t surprise me to hear of explosive devices around our harbour
The harbour entrance was heavily mined, the North beach was a complete mine field large poles with mines on them . All because the Germans were afraid of a landing attack.
A Barrier of chains and such across the harbour mouth
Not forgetting the number of ships sunk by the RAF some loaded with Explosives.
A thorough search should have been made from st Sampson’s to past Fermain bay.
But alas it was only Guernsey.

Depends what kind of ‘device’ it is as to whether it poses no threat.
One would assume it is a WW2 device otherwise it would have been dealt with discretely and without local folk knowing the risk.
These things can still go off, as we have seen over time both here and in the UK (UXBs).
