Garland won’t be greedy for medals

DALE GARLAND feels a sense of responsibility to both himself and emerging talent in Guernsey and will not enter too many events at this year’s NatWest Island Games.
Garland (pictured) is the island’s most successful track and field athlete in the history of the Games and with his decathlon background still has the ability to possibly repeat his heroics of 2003 when he won four individual golds at Foote’s Lane.
But as he prepares to make his indoor season bow over 400m at the London Games in a fortnight, the 31-year-old said he has one eye on the development of his young charges, as well as his own ambitions.
‘I am wary of taking a spot a young talented athlete could have. It is not about the medals and, anyway, I want to be competitive internationally,’ he said.
