Local binge drinking ‘short-lived’ compared with UK

BINGE drinking in Guernsey needs to be tackled, according to drug and alcohol strategy coordinator Andrea Nightingale.

The UK government is proposing a fixed minimum price for alcohol.

Mrs Nightingale (pictured) said she supported any move that reduced the amount of binge drinking in the island, but the issue of setting a minimum price had not been looked at in detail yet.

‘Binge drinking can be seen on a Friday and Saturday night, but is normally well policed and is relatively short-lived in comparison to town centres in the UK.’

Here we go again, put prices up etc to stop binge drinking, the price of alcohol in the bars, clubs etc is already overpriced (by the brewery) but they can supply all the supermarkets cheap enough that the so called binge drinkers can stock up cheaply at home have a party get half sozzled then hit the town and not have to buy too much at the pubs overpriced prices. So once again it will be the ordinary working person that will end up paying more as with everything else.
