Prison staff bullied on a daily basis, tribunal told

STAFF at the prison are bullied by management on a daily basis, it was claimed yesterday.
Senior prison officer of 20 years Mike Appelqvist (pictured) told an Employment and Discrimination Tribunal yesterday that he had been left with no choice but to resign when he left his job on 5 February last year.
After an incident in which a prisoner claimed he was assaulted, he was suspended and investigated by police but later asked to return to work. However, Mr Appelqvist said he could not face taking up his post again, believing that deputy prison governor Rachael Green was ‘out to get him’.
For the prison, barrister Jason Hill said the applicant had not followed the correct grievance procedures, questioned why he had taken so long to hand in his notice and asked whether Ms Green had simply applied a ‘robust’ form of management.
